How to ask AI for a code explanation you understand
A useful AI code explanation lets you predict what a snippet will do with another input. If you only recognize the words in the answer, you still need to check your understanding.
The approach is to request a layered explanation: purpose, input data, transformation and result. Then test that reading with an example absent from the first response.
1. Explain your starting point
State what you already know and which part is confusing. “I can use lists, but I do not understand this condition” gives better direction than asking for a beginner explanation without context.
Send only the necessary snippet, preserving names that matter for understanding the logic. Remove credentials and personal information unrelated to your question.
2. Work with a small example
Consider this demonstration function:
def acima_do_limite(valores, limite):
return [valor for valor in valores if valor > limite]
It is short enough to connect each operation to a result. Before asking for help, note what you want clarified: comparison, iteration or creating a new list.
The name suggests a purpose, but the executed condition is evidence of behavior. Ask AI to show that distinction, especially for inherited code.
3. Make a request with a defined format
The Anthropic prompting guidance recommends clear instructions and context. You can apply that approach without depending on a particular app.
I can create lists in Python but am learning filters.
Explain the snippet in four parts:
1. Its purpose in one sentence, without jargon.
2. Inputs and output, including their types.
3. Walk through valores=[2, 5, 7] and limite=5.
4. Explain whether the value 5 appears in the result and why.
Separate demonstrated behavior from assumptions about intent.
Do not rewrite the function at this stage.
The final restriction keeps the focus on understanding. A rewritten version may help later, but it creates something else to understand right now.
4. Check the explanation with a table
Organize the answer into something you can inspect. For this example, record each item and the outcome of its comparison.
| Value | Greater than 5? | Included in output? |
|---|---|---|
| 2 | No | No |
| 5 | No | No |
| 7 | Yes | Yes |
The case exactly equal to the threshold distinguishes > from >=. That small difference is often more revealing than a lengthy definition of filtering.
5. Make a prediction without looking at the answer
Choose a new list, write the expected output and run the function. If the results differ, ask AI to locate the first point where your prediction diverged.
Also ask what happens with an empty list or repeated numbers. You do not need to explore the entire language to understand this snippet’s contract.
6. Keep a useful explanation
Finish with a summary in your own words: what goes in, what comes out and which condition decides selection. Request a review of that summary rather than another complete lesson.

Frequently asked questions
How can I ask AI for a clearer code explanation?
State your experience and request the purpose, inputs, output and a worked example. Ask it to define new terminology.
Can AI know the original author’s intention?
Not necessarily. Ask it to separate observed behavior from hypotheses about what the author intended.
How can I check that I understood the code?
Predict the output for another input, run the snippet and compare. A difference helps identify which part of the explanation needs revision.
