How to study a new subject with AI without copying answers

Studying with AI can be more useful when the conversation requires you to answer, explain and revise. Reading a fluent explanation alone does not demonstrate that you can apply a concept.

In this workflow, AI supports the organization of questions and examples. You remain responsible for checking content and making your own attempts.

1. Choose a small objective

Define something you can demonstrate, such as explaining the difference between two ideas or solving a type of exercise. “Learn everything about the topic” provides no clear review point.

Write down what you already know and one concrete question. This helps request an appropriate explanation without pretending to have knowledge you do not yet possess.

2. Select a study reference

Use a chapter, classroom material or reliable document as your foundation. Tell the AI which part is available and what terminology should be used.

The UNESCO AI competency framework emphasizes critical use and understanding of the technology. This article’s exercise applies that approach to a study session without promising an automatic learning outcome.

3. Request a participatory sequence

Ask for a brief overview followed by a question you will attempt to answer. Continue only after comparing your attempt with the concept being studied.

I want to study [CONCEPT] using the material below.
My starting knowledge: [DESCRIBE].
Explain the central idea simply and ask one comprehension question.
Wait for my attempt before presenting the solution.
If I am wrong, first offer a hint and identify what I should review.
Then propose a different example for me to solve.
Do not invent information missing from the material.

This structure creates space to notice a difficulty before receiving more content. You can adapt it to a text conversation without relying on a special tool mode.

4. Explain in your own words

Close or hide the explanation and describe the concept in a few sentences. Use an example of your own, different from the one presented earlier.

If you can repeat the definition but cannot recognize a new case, revisit the missing distinction. A specific difficulty is more useful than a general “I understood” or “I did not understand”.

5. Check the feedback

AI may identify an error that is not there or accept an incomplete answer. Compare its comments with your study reference before changing your understanding.

Your attempt What to check
Definition Essential terms and conditions
Example Whether it really represents the concept
Exercise Steps and expected result
Question What still needs explanation

For external information cited during the conversation, use the source-checking workflow.

6. Finish with an independent task

Choose a small problem without immediate AI help and compare the result afterward. Record what you could do and what needs further review.

At the next session, begin with those recorded difficulties. If an explanation sounds precise without supporting evidence, see how to recognize hallucinations.

Frequently asked questions

Can AI be my only study source?

Compare its explanations with reliable material and verify important points, because AI can make mistakes.

How do I stop it from giving away an exercise answer?

Ask for one question at a time, a hint before the solution and feedback on your own attempt.

How can I tell whether I understood?

Try explaining in your own words and solving a different example without looking at the answer, then check against an appropriate reference.
